Alcohol & Drug Rehab Centers in Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles has more addiction treatment centers than almost any city in the country, and that abundance can feel less like an advantage and more like a maze. This page is built from real numbers in our directory of 55 Los Angeles-area treatment centers, not marketing copy: what's free, what takes Medi-Cal, what treats teenagers, and what happens after detox.

Free & low-cost help in Los Angeles: 35 of the 55 centers here offer free, state-funded or sliding-scale care. Filter the list below, or call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 — free and confidential, 24/7.

Finding Treatment in a City This Big

Los Angeles isn't really one city — it's dozens of communities stitched together, from Skid Row to the Westside to the San Fernando Valley, each with its own treatment landscape. That makes the first question people ask — "where do I even start?" — a genuinely hard one here in a way it isn't in smaller places.

If you or someone you love is looking for help right now, the goal of this page is to cut through that size problem with plain numbers: how many centers we track in LA, how many take Medicaid, how many are free, and how many are set up for specific situations like teenagers, veterans, or pregnant women.

Everything below comes from our own directory, built from the federal SAMHSA treatment locator and kept current — not a list copied once and left to go stale.

What the Data Actually Shows

Our directory currently tracks 55 addiction treatment centers in Los Angeles. Of those, 36 hold accreditation from an independent body like The Joint Commission or CARF (from a body like The Joint Commission or CARF), 32 accept Medi-Cal, 18 offer sliding-scale fees based on income, and 35 offer some form of free or low-cost care.

That's a meaningfully different picture than a bare list of phone numbers. It tells you, before you make a single call, that roughly two out of three centers in our LA directory are independently accredited, and that well over half offer some kind of reduced-cost path.

One thing we won't do is invent a Los Angeles-specific overdose death count. The CDC tracks these numbers nationally and by state, and updates them regularly, but we don't have a verified, current figure broken out for this city in our dataset. Rather than guess, we'd rather point you to the CDC's own overdose data tracker for the most accurate current count.

If You Don't Have Insurance

Not having insurance is one of the most common reasons people delay getting help — and one of the worst reasons to delay, because Los Angeles has real options. Of the 55 centers in our directory, 35 offer some form of free or low-cost treatment, and 18 specifically use sliding-scale fees tied to what you can actually pay.

Los Angeles County also runs its own public behavioral health system, separate from private treatment centers, which exists specifically to serve residents without insurance. If cost is the only thing standing between you and treatment, it is worth asking every center you call whether they offer a sliding scale or charity-care option before you rule them out.

Medi-Cal and Addiction Treatment in Los Angeles

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program, and it is one of the most useful tools Los Angeles residents have for affording addiction treatment. Under federal Medicaid rules, state Medicaid programs are required to cover behavioral health services, including substance use disorder treatment, and Medi-Cal specifically covers medically supervised detox, outpatient counseling, residential treatment, and medications used to treat opioid use disorder (MAT), such as buprenorphine and methadone.

Of the 55 centers we track in Los Angeles, 32 accept Medi-Cal. That's the single largest path to affordable treatment in this city for anyone who qualifies, and it's worth checking your eligibility even if you assume you won't qualify — Medi-Cal's income limits are broader than many people expect.

Specialized Care: Veterans, Pregnant Women, Teens, and Spanish Speakers

Addiction doesn't look the same for everyone, and neither does the right treatment fit. In our Los Angeles directory, 34 centers have programs specifically for veterans, 19 have programs for pregnant or postpartum women, 14 accept teenagers, and 39 offer services in Spanish.

If you're a veteran, it's worth asking a treatment center directly whether they coordinate with the VA, since 34 of the 55 centers we track say they serve this population. Spanish-speaking care is unusually well represented here — 39 of 55 centers — reflecting the city itself.

Levels of Care Available in Los Angeles

Addiction treatment generally happens along a continuum: medical detox to manage withdrawal safely, then inpatient or residential care for people who need round-the-clock structure, then outpatient programs that let people keep working or caring for family while they recover.

Of the centers in our Los Angeles directory, 18 offer medical detox and 19 offer inpatient or residential treatment. If you're not sure which level you need, that's a normal question — a lot of centers offer a free assessment call specifically to help sort that out before you commit to anything.

Who to Call Right Now

If you need to talk to someone today, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential, and available 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357. It isn't specific to Los Angeles, but it can help you understand your options and point you toward local treatment. If you or someone else is in crisis right now, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
